Remote patient education sessions result in increased confidence levels which further leads to higher user engagement.

Introduction

11 Health’s patient coaching program pairs new stoma patients with a patient coach. A patient coach is a trained health coach who has experienced the same clinical condition. The coach acts as a patients first point of contact during their recovery from surgery.

The patient coaching program is designed to deliver both emotional and educational support to new patients. This includes structured topic-specific coaching sessions between the patient, their coach and a registered ostomy nurse.

Many patients report feeling overwhelmed post-surgery and often fail to cope with the increased risk they face from dehydration. It is currently the most common cause for readmission among ileostomy patients, present in approximately 40% (1, 2).

Here we demonstrate how a topic-specific education session can lead to increased patient confidence levels and user engagement with remote care tools.

Methods

New ileostomy patients were paired with a patient coach with whom they established a standard of communication, either calls, texts, or emails. Within their first 2 weeks of participating in the patient coaching program, the patient received a 1 hour hydration coaching session, delivered to them by their patient coach and a registered ostomy nurse.

During the session patients are engaged in structured conversation around the topic of hydration, their patient coach will educate the patient on the risks of dehydration and discuss ways in which the patient can monitor and look after their hydration.

On the call a nurse will answer any medical specific questions, such as what types of fluids to drink and common signs of dehydration. Towards the end of the session the patient is introduced to 11 Health’s suite of hydration-specific resources including 11 Health’s digital hydration tracker.

Results

Eight participants (6 females, 2 males) participated in this study, they each received a 1 hour hydration specific coaching session from their patient coach.

At the beginning of the session the patient is asked to provide confidence scores between 1-5 on specific hydration related questions. The same questions are repeated at the end of the session to monitor the impact on the patient.

The increase in patient confidence levels demonstrates the immediate effect of the session.

The increased confidence levels are further evidenced by a 100% increase in user engagement with the 11 Health digital hydration tracker amongst patients who received the hydration session.

Conclusions

In this study of the effects of topic-specific patient education sessions on patient confidence levels, we have demonstrated how such sessions can increase patient confidence levels, specifically in their ability to monitor their hydration levels.

This evidence strongly suggests that a 1 hour topic-specific education session can improve patient confidence levels to self-regulate and monitor their ongoing risk of dehydration, as well as, lead to increased patient engagement.
